MECHANIC FALLS — Voters narrowly struck down a proposal Tuesday night to move the town library to the former railroad depot building.
The proposal failed 23-21.
The Town Council scheduled Tuesday night’s special town meeting to ask if voters wanted to enter into a lease agreement with Depot Square LLC, which owns the former depot building.
Town Manager Zakk Maher said the town will now go back to the original plan of incorporating the library into the former medical building at 22 Pleasant St., which also houses the Town Offices and Police Department.
Maher said the council will still seek cost-saving measures in the construction process.
Last November, voters approved a bond package of $724,311 to relocate the Town Offices. The amount included $500,000 to renovate the building and $224,311 to pay off the loan on the current Municipal Building on Lewiston Street.
At Tuesday’s meeting, much of the discussion challenged an earlier claim that the town could save about $150,000 by moving the library to the railroad depot building.
