LEWISTON — Following an early-season scoreless tie against rival Edward Little, Lewiston girls’ soccer coach Brant Remington said his team was having a tough time scoring goals.
When the rivals met again Tuesday night, the Blue Devils had little trouble scoring the goals that eluded them the first time around.
Emma Paquette and Maddy Foster scored less than three minutes apart in the first half and Lewiston rallied early to beat Edward Little 3-1 at Don Roux Field, keeping the Maca Roddy Trophy in Lewiston.
“These girls, they knew they were out of playoffs, but they just, they didn’t quit all season,” Remington said. “They were in a lot of games, and the last thing that they wanted to do was bow out at the end, and they really stepped it up, they did a really good job. So I’m really proud of them for that.”
The Red Eddies (2-9-3) had few scoring chances, but they made the most of their first one 17:28 in. Hanna Roy’s shot from the right side glanced off a Blue Devils (3-10-1) defender and forced Lewiston goalie Gemma Landry to try and make a diving save. Landry’s attempt nearly worked, but the ball just squeaked over the goal line.
Paquette took a direct kick from just outside the box less than four minutes later, and a clear attempt made it back to her before she fired a shot past EL goalie Kayleigh Leclerc.
“Emma Paquette scored her first goal in high school. She’s a back, so that was great,” Remington said. “That was uplifting.”
Foster took a shot from the top-left corner of the box with just over 15 minutes left in the first half and it looped over the head of Leclerc.
“I mean, give them credit, they were going hard, playing on their home field, they wanted to keep the trophy,” Edward Little coach Miles Bisher said. “We didn’t do a good job stepping to the ball, and that was really, basically, that simple. I mean, we were not stepping to the ball, we were giving them too much time, and they have some good players that were going to shoot from a distance and were good enough to put it on frame. So give them credit, all the credit due to them.”
Foster scored again on an assist from Megan St. Cyr with less than six minutes to play in the game.
Leclerc made 14 saves on 17 shots for EL, while Landry made four stops for Lewiston.
“She came in part way through the season. … You know, Kayleigh was working hard, wanted to get some time in net, gave her an opportunity and, you know, she seems to be in the right places,” Bisher said.
