This week’s edition of Whitehouse Talking Points is dedicated to Larry King’s old USA Today column. The man essentially invented tweeting. He had his finger on the pulse of everything back then (back then being when people still read USA Today) and shared what he knew in 140 characters or less. And readers hung on every word (mostly because the hotel didn’t serve brunch until 8 a.m.).
If this column leaves you thinking of me as the Larry King of high school football (and not just because of the thick glasses and suspenders), I would be honored.
• I’m sorry, I just can’t get behind installing lights at Thompson Field.
• I haven’t had pumpkin anything since last Thanksgiving.
• If I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard a coach, player, fan or chain gang member remark, “That would be a flag in the pros,” after a good, legal hit or tackle …
• Edward Little’s Leighton Girardin made a whole lot of something out of nothing for two touchdowns, one passing and one rushing, in last week’s 41-21 win over Windham.
• Looking forward to visiting Griffin Field for the first time this year and watching one of the great traditions in central Maine — the Spruce Mountain team, band and cheerleaders marching down the hill to the field.
• Getting a first look at Spruce Mountain juniors Jack Bryant and Brandon Frey against a speedy Mountain Valley defense is going to be fun, too.
• I’ll be at homecomings for Oxford Hills and Leavitt on Saturday. This brings to mind my annual homecoming question: Whatever happened to rigging all of the contests for the seniors?
• Or was that Winter Carnival?
• Friday nights at Caldwell Field are fun again for Mt. Blue fans. The Cougars are 2-0 at home for the first time since 2013.
• Any major changes to Maine high school football’s structure, and that includes the potential introduction of eight-man football, needs to include cutting back on the number of teams who make the playoffs.
• Could the Red Sox please wrap this thing up immediately so we don’t have to keep checking for score updates this weekend? Or maybe next?
• Only 57 more days until pitchers and catchers repor… I mean, until Super Saturday at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
