‘Owls of Maine’ at Whitman Library

BRYANT POND — The Chewonki Traveling Natural History Programs will present “Owls of Maine” at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at the Whitman Memorial Library.

This is one of 13 different programs offered to schools and libraries that bring live animals to the community. The program is open to the public at no charge, and light refreshments will be served.

Society plans first fall meeting

DIXFIELD — The Dixfield Historical Society will hold its first fall meeting on Thursday, Sept. 13.

The business meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Museum House followed by a free concert at the Village Green Gazebo.

The summer raffle and a door prize will be drawn. Gil Hembree and Pete Scott from Weld will play country rock oldies and favorites from 7 to 8 p.m.

Hembree plays during the winter in Austin, Texas. Hembree and Scott will be the opening act at Farmington Fair this year on Sept. 16.

The public is invited to this free concert. If inclement weather, the concert will be held in the Historical Society meeting room.

Texas Hold’em tournament Sept. 15

LOCKE MILLS — Jackson-Silver Post 68, American Legion, will have a Texas Hold’em poker tournament Saturday, Sept. 15, at 595 Gore Road.

Doors will open at 11 a.m., and games will begin at 1 p.m. There will be a $50 buy-in, a 50/50 raffle and pull tabs. Meals and beverages available; players may bring their own drinks. The hall is air-conditioned.

MLT to hike Old Speck 

NEWRY — Mahoosuc Land Trust will lead a hike up Old Speck in Grafton Notch State Park. 

The hike will begin at 7:45 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the trailhead on Route 26, 12 miles north of the Route 2 intersection.

Skeet shooting at fish and game 

WATERFORD — Recreational skeet shooting is held at 1 p.m. Saturdays and 9 a.m. Thursdays at the Waterford Fish & Game Association, Route 118.

The public is welcome and should bring a shotgun and ammo. The cost is $3 a round of 25 targets.

WEST PARIS — The Finnish-American Heritage Society of Maine will hold its monthly meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at the FinnAm building on Maple Street.

CROP Walk to be held Sept. 16

BETHEL — The 12th annual CROP (Communities Respond to Overcome Poverty) Walk will be Sunday, Sept. 16.

It will begin with an ecumenical church service on the Bethel Common at 10 a.m.

The 3-mile walk will commence from the Common around 11:30 a.m. Seventy-five percent of the donations will be given to Church World Service and 25 percent to the Bethel Food Pantry.

The children’s 1-miler starts at 9 a.m., the 5k at 9:30.

Sumner library closes for season

SUMNER — The Increase Robinson Library and Neighborhood House has closed for the 2018 season as the library is unheated.

Volunteers will continue to work in the library, and if a car is parked at the library, visitors may drop in. 

The library will reopen in June.
