LISBON — The solid waste director is asking selectmen to approve disposal fees for more than 20 items that currently can be disposed of without cost.

Wayne Ricker made the request after seeing that his 2003-04 budget for waste disposal was nearing the half-million-dollar mark.

Selectmen will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, at the town office to hear comments on the proposal, which if approved, would go into effect May 1.

Ricker said his budget for the coming year is about $496,000. In an effort to hold the property tax rate down, he recommended a new user fee schedule that will shift more of the cost of solid waste disposal to “the ones that bring it in.”

If approved by selectmen, residents will have to pay to bring these items to the transfer station:

• $10 each: computers, sofas, love seats, double, king and queen mattresses and box springs, carpets (per room) and TVs up to 21-inch;

• $15: TVs 22-inch and above and consoles;

• $ 5: stuffed chairs, automobile seats and single mattresses;

• Carpet, 5 cents per pound;

• Brush, $8 per yard or 3 cents per pound;

• Demolition wood, $15 per yard or 4 cents per pound;

• Shingles, $40 per yard or 4 cents per pound;

• Drywall, $30 per yard or 4 cents per pound;

• Mixed loads, $30 per yard or 5 cents per pound;

• Toilets, $3;

• Anti-freeze, $1 per gallon;

• Mixed gas, $4 per gallon.

Residents will be charged on loads one-half yard or larger and commercial users will be charged for all material. Selectmen encourage oral or written comments.
