LEWISTON – A researcher of sexuality and gender bias in Japan will offer two presentations at Bates College next week.

Sponsored by the Freeman Foundation, both events are free and open to the public.

Takashi Sugiyama will discuss gays in Japan’s educational system and read from an autobiographical essay, “An Index of Liberation,” at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, in the Keck Classroom (G52) at Pettengill Hall.

Sugiyama will screen “Hush,” a 2001 film by writer/director Ryosuke Hashiguchi at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, in Room 105 of the Olin Arts Center, 75 Russell St. The film, in Japanese with English subtitles, explores sexual minorities and family issues in Japan. Sugiyama will offer commentary and answer questions.
