LEWISTON — Everyone is invited to celebrate the Twin Cities’ diverse communities at World Refugee Day from 5 to 7 p.m. July 30, at Simard-Payne Memorial Park.
The event will feature food from refugees and asylum-seekers from all parts of the world who have made Lewiston and Auburn their home over the past 18 years. There will be entertainment, activities and speakers.
“This event is about togetherness, and the resilience, courage and sense of belonging that truly characterize our unique Maine community,” said Fatuma Hussein, director of the Immigrant Resource Center of Maine. “We hope everyone will bring their families to share in the cultures of their neighbors.”
The event will be an important opportunity for dialogue for the Lewiston-Auburn community as a whole.
“It’s a blessing that we have such a strong, diverse population in our community, and this event is a great way to celebrate it!” Shawn Yardley, CEO of Community Concepts, said.
The event is sponsored by Bates College, Catholic Charities, City of Lewiston, City of Auburn, Community Concepts, Health Affiliates Maine, Immigrant Resource Center of Maine, Lewiston Public Schools, Root Cellar, Spurwink and St. Mary’s Nutrition Center.
