SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) – A young Vermont marine killed in combat in Iraq was due to be buried Monday with full military honors.

Mark Asher Evnin, 21, a Marine corporal from South Burlington, was killed April 3 near Kut, Iraq, shortly after his unit, the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, crossed the Tigris River in a drive toward Baghdad.

Funeral services for Evnin were scheduled for 11 a.m. in Ohavi Zedek Synagogue in Burlington.

A detachment of the Marine Corps League, Donald Cook Detachment 608 of Burlington, will serve as a color guard at the synagogue and at the cemetery in dress uniform.

A Marine Corps honor guard will attend the burial to present military honors to Evnin.

The funeral procession will pass South Burlington High School on its route to the Hebrew Holy Society Cemetery in South Burlington. Evnin was a member of the class of 2000.

Students will assemble in front of the school to pay their respects to Evnin as the procession goes past, said Principal Patrick Burke, who will attend the funeral service and burial with several teachers.

The school remembered Evnin with a moment of silence and lowered the flag to half-staff when word of the former student’s fate arrived shortly after he was killed.

Tim Comolli, a teacher at the high school who knew Evnin well, will speak at the service.
