DEAR SUN SPOTS: I just saw the movie “Book Club.” Could you match up the girls with the guys who were in the movie? I’d like their real names. — No name, Lewiston
ANSWER: Wasn’t that movie a hoot? I saw it, too and am thinking of going again! It’s wonderful to have movies to see that star actors of a “certain age.”
“Book Club” is a romantic comedy released by Paramount Pictures and is Bill Holderman’s directorial debut. It was written by Holderman and Erin Simms. It stars Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen as four friends who read the book “Fifty Shades of Grey” as part of their monthly book club, and subsequently change how they view their personal relationships and their lives overall. The film received mixed reviews from critics, but everyone I’ve talked to about “Book Club” has loved it. I was especially happy to see Candice Bergen in the mix, playing the judge, Sharon, who signs up for an online dating site and meets George, played by Richard Dreyfuss. Jane Fonda plays the sexy Vivian much like her character as Grace on the Netflix series hit, “Grace & Frankie.” She reunites with an old flame, Arthur, played by Don Johnson. Diane Keaton, as widow Diane, falls for Mitchell, played by Andy Garcia. Mary Steenbergen plays the frustrated, yet fun-loving Carol, who loves her husband, Bruce, played by Craig T. Nelson. Alicia Silverstone and Ed Begley Jr. also have supporting roles.
The movie is cute overall and funny in spots. Diane’s tangle with a plastic pool float shaped like a swan is hilarious.
