CANTON — The Town Office will be closed for two weeks, starting Monday, because the interim administrative assistant, who is also the town clerk, tax collector and treasurer, resigned as of Friday.

Deputy Town Clerk Kathy Walker, who was appointed to the four additional positions temporarily after Scott Kilbreth resigned in April, also resigned as deputy town clerk. 

“Another job opportunity has been offered to me,” Walker wrote in her resignation letter read by Board of Selectmen Chairman Brian Keene at Thursday night’s meeting.

“I will still be involved with various groups in the town and will look forward to the continued activities with everyone.”

She thanked selectmen for their support during her five years as a town employee.

The Town Office will be closed Wednesday, and open Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon.

After that, it will be closed from July 9 to 31 while selectmen advertise for the five open positions and conduct interviews.

Residents can mail payments for taxes and sewer bills to the Town Office at 94 Turner St., and register vehicles at the Hartford Town Office.

Residents may also contact selectmen by phone or email if they have questions.

Keene said Tuesday that selectmen will review applications for administrative assistant and town clerk at their meeting Thursday evening and conduct interviews next week.

The deputy town clerk position will be advertised in the Sun Journal on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, he said. It’s also posted on the town Facebook page and the Maine Municipal Job Bank.

In other business Thursday, selectmen reappointed Jason Vaughan as fire chief for five years. He was originally appointed in March as interim fire chief when Sherman Bradeen resigned.

The board also reappointed John Evans as code enforcement officer and plumbing inspector for one year. He was named to those positions in April when Kay Hawkins retired.

Also, selectmen elected Russell Adams as chairman of the board. Rob Walker was re-elected vice chairman.

In other news, Selectman Carole Robbins said a town cleanup day is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday, July 15. Volunteers will meet at the former Canton Elementary School parking lot across from the ball field on Route 140.

The Canton Bicentennial Committee is inviting the public to its Margarita Summer Party at the Canton boat launch off Route 140 from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 21. Margaritas Mexican Restaurant will serve a taco bar and margaritas, beer and wine for purchase. There will be music and free chips and salsa, and free soft drinks for designated drivers.
