COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — SPC Austin Jacob Martel, 20, of Greene, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 30, while serving his country in the U.S. Army with the Fourth Infantry Division at Fort Carson in Colorado.

He was born in Lewiston on Oct. 7, 1997, the son of Jean C. and Angela (Carey) Martel and had been a resident of this community all of his life.

Austin enlisted in the U.S. Army as a motor transport operator upon graduation from Leavitt Area High School in Turner in June 2015. He was assigned to Fox Company, 3-29th Field Artillery Battalion, 3rd Armor Brigade Combat Team and 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colo. He deployed to Poland, Germany and Romania in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve. His most recent assignment was with Hotel Company, 1-66th Armor battalion, 3rd Armor Brigade Combat team, 4th Infantry Division.

His awards include the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Overseas Ribbon and the Army Service Ribbon.

Austin was an avid outdoorsman having enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and four-wheeling. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends but most of all loved spending time with his son, Henry.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Martel, of Turner; his son, Henry Martel, of Turner; his parents, Jean and Angela Martel of Greene; his sister, Kayla Martel of Greene; his maternal grandparents, John Carey Sr. of Mechanic Falls and Patricia Carey of Lewiston; his paternal grandmother, Emily Martel, of Greene; his Uncle Johnny Carey Jr. and his wife Michele of Turner, Uncle Moe Martel Jr. and his wife Kim of Greene and his Aunt Theresa Dwinal and her husband Brad of Freeport; cousins Justin and Katelyn Carey of Turner and Christopher, Ashley and Brandon Martel, all of Greene.

He was predeceased by his grandfather Maurice Martel Sr.
