BETHEL – With the war on Iraq in full swing, some residents are asking why Bethel hasn’t posted its American flags in the village.

That’s one of several topics the Board of Selectmen is slated to review and discuss at its 7 p.m. meeting Monday, April 7, in the town office.

Other items include reviewing:

• A proposal for dedicated police coverage via contracting with Oxford County.

• A draft of three possible municipal referendum questions for June that would ask voters to: appropriate $1.3 million to build a fire station, appropriate $150,000 to rehabilitate and expand the ambulance barn, and authorize selectmen to enter an agreement with Oxford County Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement coverage.

• Pending legislation pertinent to Bethel.

• The town fee schedule.

Pending legislation includes Larry Warren’s proposal to create new recreation trails in the 37,000-acre Bigelow Preserve as part of a new 180-mile hut and trails system running from Newry to Rockwood.

Warren is a former president of Sugarloaf USA in Carrabassett Valley.

The board will also discuss the merits of LD 1359, which would permit consumer-owned water utilities to exercise local control by participating in a pilot project that allows them to operate without oversight from the Public Utilities Commission.

Other items include considering future airport funding via amendments to the Administration Ordinance, the issuance of a request for proposals for liability insurance coverage, and an update on improvements to the Main Street railroad crossing and area between the crossings.

A routine public hearing will be held on a liquor license renewal for Kowloon Village Chinese Restaurant.
