Selectmen decided last fall to rebuild Concord Pond Road in phases.

WOODSTOCK – Repair of the Concord Pond Road will begin as soon as the frost is out of the ground, Road Commissioner Vern Maxfield told selectmen last week.

The highway crew is laying out plans for the project, which will be done in phases. The town approved $20,000 for Phase 1.

“This year’s phase will include a half-mile stretch starting at the power line on the Milton end and another half mile in the Shackley Hill area near the Peru town line,” said Maxfield, who is also the town manager. “The plan is to do extensive ditching and build up the road grade with new gravel. This will help solve runoff problems and build the road up to cover rocks and ledges that have been uncovered over the years.”

The road is not plowed by the town during the winter. It serves many camps around the shore of Big Concord Pond and has seen little maintenance for many years. Selectmen decided last fall to rebuild it in phases before conditions worsen and because the road may have to be opened for year-round maintenance because of more traffic.

“As soon as the frost is out and the road dries up so it can handle heavy trucks we’ll start hauling gravel and get the work under way,” Maxfield said.

Money for Phase II will be requested at the annual town meeting next March.

Maxfield also reported he is looking for residents to serve on a standing committee to oversee the comprehensive plan that was adopted by the voters March 1. The growth plan covers goals and strategies that will protect the town from uncontrolled development, monitor population growth and leave control of town ordinances in the hands of the people.

Selectman Percy Monk was elected chairman of the board for the coming year by colleagues Steve Bies and Leon Poland.
