The district began a pilot program at two schools at the beginning of the school year.
OXFORD – The SAD 17 board Monday adopted the Investigations Program for Mathematics, a program focused on problem solving.
Superintendent Mark Eastman noted that the district needed to strengthen the elementary mathematics program and this program was chosen because of its successes in several states and recommendations.
The district began a pilot program at Harrison Elementary and Guy E. Rowe School in Norway at the beginning of the school year to see how Investigations was accepted.
Principals at both schools reported positively.
Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School teacher Allen Gerry said he hopes he is still teaching when these elementary students taking the Investigations program reach the secondary education level.
“One of the most important things you can do is get kids excited about math and make it more than just remembering numbers,” Gerry said. “And this program does that.”
In other business the board allowed the Community Child Care Center to continue to use a room at the Rowe Annex for child care and to use a room at the Mildred M. Fox School in Paris for its summer program.
The board also acknowledged Billie Lou Damon, a special education teacher at the Fox School, as staff person of the month.
