HEBRON – Everyday Principal Greg Knight goes to work, takes a glance upward and notes the distinctive light of each planet.

It’s not that his vision is that keen, it’s just that the architectural firm that designed the lobby of the Hebron Station Elementary School used a motif that portrays the planets with lights and the sun with a round skylight.

This design won the Illumination Design Award for the Bucksport architectural firm of Lewis and Malm, as presented by the Downeast chapter of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America.

Architect Rick Malm said the Downeast branch of IESNA was sending the design into national competition.

Malm said the concept of using the whole space started with the staff and his lighting engineer, Dwight N. Lampher, who came up with the idea of using different-sized lights to represent the planets.

“We had the lobby space that was round and the concept of having that as the central focus place started with the staff,” Malm said. “From there, people enter the gym, cafeteria and library. So, it was decided to portray the lobby lighting as the solar system.”

Malm said his firm was presented the award in March. It was the first illumination design award his firm had ever won, he said.
