Former President George H.W. Bush was taken to a Biddeford hospital Sunday after experiencing fatigue and low blood pressure, a family spokesman said.

James McGrath said on Twitter that Bush probably will remain at Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford for a few days for observation.

“The president is awake and alert, and not in any discomfort,” McGrath said Sunday afternoon.

At 7 p.m. Sunday, McGrath said Bush’s condition had not changed.

“There really is no change to report at this time,” he said in a telephone interview. “He is resting comfortably.”

McGrath said Bush’s daughter Dorothy “Doro” Bush Koch, who is in Maine for the summer, was with her father in the hospital Sunday.

Bush, 93, arrived at his family’s compound at Walker’s Point in Kennebunkport last week from his winter home in Houston. He has spent every summer since childhood in Kennebunkport except when he was a naval aviator during World War II.

He met with other fellow veterans at a pancake breakfast Saturday at American Legion Post 159 in Kennebunkport. He had been scheduled to attend a Memorial Day parade in the town on Monday, The Associated Press reported.

Former first lady Barbara Bush died at age 92 on April 17. The Bushes had been married for 73 years. 

Bush was admitted April 22 to Houston Methodist Hospital, the day after his wife’s funeral. He was treated for an infection that spread to his blood. He was hospitalized for 13 days.

Bush has a form of Parkinson’s disease and a history of pneumonia and other infections. He uses a wheelchair to get around.

The Bush family has a connection to Southern Maine Health Care that stretches back decades. 

In 2008, SMHC Medical Center named its newly built emergency care pavilion after President Bush’s late mother, Dorothy Walker Bush. Both the former president and first lady attended the pavilion’s dedication ceremony in July 2008.

After Barbara Bush died last month, SMHC President and CEO Ed McGeachey described her as a dedicated supporter of the hospital who frequently expressed her gratitude for the care it had provided to her family and friends over many years.
