NORWAY — The Board of Selectmen unanimously voted Thursday evening to accept Craig MacDonald as a reserve police officer for the Norway Police Department.
Police Chief Rob Federico Sr. said that he always likes to have at least three reserve police officers working for the department at any given time.
“Two of our reserve officers have full-time jobs, so they’re limited on how much they can work shifts for us,” Federico told the board.
“Craig came to us a month or so ago about coming on as a reserve officer. He’s taken the initial classes online and been to the (Maine Criminal Justice) Academy for two weeks, so this would be phase three for his training to become approved as a reserve officer.”
Federico said MacDonald would have to put in 80 hours with the department, “and he’ll have to put in a whole lot more than that to become cleared by us to work.”
MacDonald said he was “excited to pick up this opportunity” and to “learn more about being a police officer and doing it right.”
“Chief Federico comes highly recommended,” MacDonald said, “so I am looking forward to this opportunity.”
Before voting, Selectman Russell Newcomb said “if (MacDonald) is good enough for the chief, he’s good enough for me.”
Selectmen on Thursday also voted to accept more than $2,000 in donations and reimbursements. These include $1,903 in insurance proceeds for the Police Department police cruiser, and $200 from Responsible Pet Care for the Norway Police Department canine program.
