MEXICO — Selectmen have chosen Eileen Thibeau, who volunteers at the food pantry and makes quilts for veterans, to receive the town’s Spirit of America Award.

She is “the Spirit of America,” said Barbara Arsenault, who nominated her.

Thibeau, a resident of Orchard Street, volunteers with the Mexico Congregational Church food bank. She and her quilting group, T Gals, have donated more than 113 quilts to area veterans to provide warmth and an expression of gratitude, Arsenault said.

Thibeau is chaplain of the Rumford American Legion Auxiliary, providing spiritual guidance for the 145-member organization.

Her selection for the award was announced Feb. 20.

The Spirit of America award honors local individuals, organizations and projects for  community service.

Also at their Feb. 20 meeting, selectmen approved the bicentennial logo for the town’s annual report, which is dedicated to the late Pat Thomas, who spent 25 years in the Town Office. The report is also in memory of Wendell “Chummy” Broomhall, who was born in Mexico.
