WINTHROP — The Bailey Public Library will partner with the Maine Humanities Council to present “Let’s Talk About It,” a five-part series focusing on famous Civil War biographies. The events will be held on the fourth Tuesday of each month from February to June.

The first meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, and will feature the title, “My Bondage and My Freedom,” by Frederick Douglass.

Each discussion will be hosted by Sarah Firth, who has been facilitating conversations professionally for 25 years. The series is offered through the Maine Humanities Council in partnership with the Maine State Library. The goal of the series is to provide an in-depth, personal view of life during the Civil War era.

“My Bondage and My Freedom” is Douglass’s second autobiography and a literary classic of the American Renaissance. In it, the famous escaped slave and abolitionist leader gives an account of his emergence into a life of freedom. Copies of the books for each event will be available at the Bailey Library.

Firth has worked as an internal consultant at MaineGeneral Health and for a variety of small nonprofits through her consulting firm. She grew up in a small town in Connecticut and went to Connecticut College, earning a B.A. in English. She moved to Maine in 1982 and lives in Vienna. She is employed by the Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault. She is the current president of Maranacook High School Booster Club and is a member of the Mill Stream Grange and Union Hall Association in Vienna.
