PARIS — Best-selling author and writing coach Roger Housden said, “Everything I know about being human has been deepened by the poems I’ve read.” The artistry of poetry can offer knowledge and deep understanding in a succinct form.

People of all ages are invited to join the Paris Public Library in the Children’s Room at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, to honor Black History Month. Select short poems about and by African Americans will be read and discussed.

Some of the selections will be Maya Angelou’s “Poetry for Young People,” Langston Hughes’ “Poetry for Young People,” Belinda Rochelle’s “Words with Wings” and Kay Winters’ “Voices from the Underground Railroad.”

A large selection of books highlighting black history will also be on display. Everyone is welcome; the short poetry selections will be appropriate for children and adults. Light refreshments will be available.
