OXFORD — Oxford County residents need to be aware of a phone scam in which an unidentified person is calling and threatening to arrest them on an outstanding warrant.
Chief Deputy Hart Daley, who is serving as interim sheriff, put out a public service announcement via Facebook on Friday, warning people that someone is calling, and falsely identifying as him.
The calls are being made from a “spoof phone” with the number 207-517-1085. Daley explained that spoofing is the practice of causing the telephone network to incorrectly identify the number from which the call is being made from.
Daley said it is commonly used in scams, and that he “would never be calling anyone at any time regarding a warrant arrest.”
This past Wednesday, the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office issued a scam alert of the same nature, saying that someone was calling people, identifying himself as Sheriff Eric Samson and threatening to arrest them on an outstanding warrant.
That number has since been disconnected.
