CARRABASSETT VALLEY — A woman safely escaped a fire Thursday night that destroyed a home on Fox Hollow Road, Fire Chief Courtney Knapp said Friday.
The woman, who was a guest at the rented two-story house built in the early 1970s, reported the fire at about 8:45 p.m.
About 25 firefighters from Carrabassett Valley, Eustis, Kingfield and New Portland responded to fight the blaze. A NorthStar EMS ambulance also responded.
“The building was totaled,” he said, with three-quarters of it still standing.
A woman who was renting the house was not at home at the time the fire started.
The house is owned by John Walker, Knapp said. Knapp believed the house was insured.
Walker is from New Hampshire, according to town records.
Firefighters shuttled water from a hydrant at Sugarloaf to the residence in the Redington development off Route 27, he said. It is about a five-mile round-trip.
Firefighters were at the site until 1 a.m. Friday.
The origin and cause of the fire were undetermined early Friday afternoon.
“We are still investigating the cause,” he said. Interviews are being conducted with witnesses. Knapp expects to have his report done Monday.
