Dozens of crows roost in trees between Pettingill and Russell streets in Lewiston on Thursday. The large communal sleeping groups are called “winter roosts,” a phenomenon that peaks in winter and decreases near the beginning of the breeding season, usually in March. It is unknown exactly why the birds create seasonal roosts, but the most popular theories are for protection or sharing food. (Andree Kehn/Sun Journal)
