RUMFORD — Mexico bicentennial coins were introduced to the public on Saturday at a table outside the Dollar Tree.

The town of Mexico will celebrate its 200th birthday in 2018.

Bicentennial committee member Marilla Couch said the coins, which will be available at the Mexico Town Office, can be purchased for $10. Items are also available at the Mexico Historical Society Museum at 3 Oxford St. on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sales of the Mexicopoly board game continue to do well, as 150 of 500 have already been sold, she said. Mexicopoly, which costs $30, features about 40 businesses and comes with a full-sized board, mortgage cards, “money,” fate cards, yellow personalized cards, tokens and dice.

Couch said the games will be physically available by the end of September. They can be ordered by contacting any committee member or by visiting the committee page, Bicentennial of Mexico, Maine, on Facebook.

She said the committee will be participating in the Pumpkin Fest on Congress Street on Oct. 14, and the Oktoberfest at the Hope Association on Oct. 21. Youth and adult T-shirts, hoodies, ceramic spooner mugs and sip ‘n’ flip aluminum mugs will be available for sale.

Couch said they still need community help with making at least two quilts and decorate muslin quilt squares. They may be decorated in any appropriate, permanent crafting method, Couch said. The squares do not cost anything, she said.

One finished quilt will be donated to the Mexico Town Office and any additional quilts will be raffled during the bicentennial year.

On Nov. 14 and 15, a free bicentennial quilting course through Region 9 will be offered. Four teachers will be available to show attendees a variety of ways to create quilting squares. Contact Region 9 for more information.

The committee is planning activities throughout 2018 and is looking for participants for the activities, including a Revolutionary War reenactment group; participants for a Woodsmen’s Day; parade participants, including Shriners; antique vehicles, town emergency vehicles, scout troops and other youth groups; bands, gymnasts, martial arts groups, floats, food vendors, bounce houses, entertainers, clowns and photo booths; crafters who sell their wares but who also want to demonstrate something that can be easily shared; and cooks and chefs for a chili, chowder and pie competition.
