JAY — The Sewer Department will do smoke tests of sewer lines on Franklin Road, also known as Route 133, from the town line to Highland Road and adjoining streets next week.

Groundwater is getting into the line, department Superintendent Mark Holt told selectpersons Monday night.

Testing is scheduled from 7 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Sept. 5, from near the meter pit at the Livermore Falls line to Highland Road. Residences on Jewell Street and possible other side streets may see some smoke, Holt said.

Additional work could be performed through Sept. 8, if needed. These tests will assist in locating any breaks or defects in the sewer system.

During the test, residents may see smoke coming from vent stacks on buildings or from holes in the ground. There is nothing to be alarmed about, Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere said.

The smoke has no odor and is not toxic. It is nonstaining, and does not create a fire hazard, and will dissipate in a few minutes, she said.

Notices with additional information on them will be left on doors of area residences in the testing area.
