According to state police Sgt. Scott Dalton, dogs and their handlers must train or be part of an active operation at least once a month to remain certified. It is also important to learn new techniques. Using an occupied building instead of a school or public building offers more challenges because it is not such a “sterile environment,” Dalton said.
