WILTON — Selectpersons on Tuesday agreed to a right-turn only from High Street onto Main Street during this weekend’s Blueberry Festival.
Since several activities are planned around the monument during the festival, the monument area will be closed off Friday and Saturday, Town Manager Rhonda Irish said.
Other streets around the monument area will be closed at times to accommodate live entertainment and other activities.
A portion of Main Street from Cushing School to the police station will be closed Friday night during the Family Fun Run One-Miler, which starts at 6 p.m., Irish said. The area around the town garage on Weld Road will also close for a time Friday night when the 5k and 10k races get started at 6:30 p.m., she said.
In related business, Public Works Foreman Dale Roberts provided an update on safety measures being taken at the McCrillis Corner Road intersection where several accidents have taken place this year, including a fatality in May.
Brush around the intersection and in the right of way is being cut and stop-ahead signs along with blinking yellow lights for those signs are being added, he said. Stencils, borrowed from Rumford, will soon be used to imprint a “Stop ahead” message onto the road.
Small, blinking red lights now surround the stop sign on the right side of the road as drivers approach the intersection from the east. These were added by the Maine Department of Transportation.
Most of the accidents have involved drivers traveling from the west on McCrillis Corner Road and vehicles on Route 133.
Selectpersons considered cutting a pine tree near the intersection and in front of the hair salon, Snippers, on the east side of the intersection that may interfere with the view of the approaching stop. Although the tree is within the town’s right of way, the property owner does not want the tree cut, Roberts said.
Photos taken Tuesday show a stop sign on the left side of the road, but the sign with lights can be hidden or partially hidden at different points in the road.
Roberts also asked about eliminating one stop sign, keeping another stop sign and moving a yield sign at the Lake Road and Route 2 intersection because drivers fail to stop. Selectpersons agreed with his idea.
Selectperson Keith Swett suggested the two entrances to Lake Road at the intersection become one turn. The board considered asking the Maine Department of Transportation to make the change.
