NEW GLOUCESTER — Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village on Route 26 will participate in Maine Open Farm Day from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 23.
A working farm since 1783, Shaker Village is among the oldest farms in Maine still operated under the same management. Visitors can see Scottish highland cattle, a flock of more than 40 sheep, bees, barn cats, apple orchards, herb and vegetable gardens.
Featured activities during that day will include guided tours of the 1830 barns by Brother Arnold Hadd, tractor-drawn wagon rides, honey bee display and hives, and tours of the Shakers’ historic herb gardens.
There will be traditional craft demonstrations in woodcarving, blacksmithing, yarn spinning, chair seat weaving, “Lamb to Loom,” rug hooking, and dovetailing demonstration by Chris Becksvoort.
There will also be a tin-type photography demonstration.
A bake sale and a plant sale are also planned.
Barbecue lunch plates will be offered.
The Shaker Store and Shaker Museum Visitors’ Center will be open. Book signings by Mary Doyle, author of “Unique Maine Farms,” and Don Perkins, author of “Barns of Maine,” will be held.
