100 years ago, 1917
As the days pass, interest grows in the erection of an armory in Lewiston, for which an appropriation of $30,000 was made at the last session of the legislature. Several weeks ago Governor Milliken appointed a joint committee, consisting of Adjutant General Presson of Augusta. A. G. Gagnon and D. M. Bates, both of Lewiston, and two Bangor men to supervise the erection of both Lewiston and Bangor armories. Many are asking when work will start. It is understood that the site commonly known as Haymarket square, has been tentatively selected, but as yet no definite stops have been taken by the committee.

50 years ago, 1967
A familiar, three-story structure on Lisbon Street in Lewiston is being purchased by two area businessmen. The brick building, one floor of which was formerly occupied by Maynard’s Boot Shop, is located at 178-180 Lisbon St. Purchasing the building, which has been empty for three years, are Charles Levin of Lewiston and Anthony J. Dumas of Lisbon Falls. The transaction is being handled for the seller through the trust department of the Depositors’ Trust Company.

“Squire Little” is leaving the Auburn school system. Today is Larry LaBrie’s last day as principal of Edward Little High School. Starting Wednesday, he will be an assistant director of the Maine Principals’ Association in Augusta. For some people, a job change might just entail cleaning out one office and setting up another. For LaBrie, it will mean the end of nearly a lifetime’s involvement in the Auburn public schools. “It’s like losing Squire Little himself,” ELHS Assistant Principal Steve Galway remarked recently, comparing LaBrie to the illustrious early settler for whom the secondary school was named.
