HALLOWELL (AP) — A plan to trim the number of moose hunting permits offered in Maine to its lowest level since 1998 will be the subject of a public hearing.
The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife wants to cut the number of moose permits to 2,080, which is 60 less than last year. The permits are distributed via a lottery that attracts tens of thousands of applicants.
The proposal will be subject of a public hearing on Monday at the Ice Vault in Hallowell. The state is also taking public comments via other means until March 30.
The state is proposing to trim the moose permits from the mid-coast, Bangor and Augusta areas, which do not constitute a big piece of the moose hunt.
