DEAR SUN SPOTS: I always enjoy your column. I am looking for a knit pattern for a gingerbread boy. Thank you. — No name, Lisbon Falls.
ANSWER: A gingerbread boy pattern is included in the book “We Knit You a Merry Christmas,” by Debbie Harrold. It is available at a few libraries around the state, but you can request this book at your local library through interlibrary loan.
A free and printable knit pattern for a gingerbread boy is available at ravelry.com/patterns/library/gingerbread-boy-4.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I need help caning a porch rocker. I know I’ll be OK with the weaving section, but I am having a problem connecting a new warp. I was successful years ago doing this craft, but now I need help. Is there anyone in the Lewiston-Auburn area, or nearby towns, who can give me a lesson? Call 207-786-7418. — No name, no town.
ANSWER: There is a class being offered by Lewiston Adult Education, traditional chair caning, being taught by Robin Spencer. The class begins at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, at Lewiston High School. To register, go to lewistonadulted.org.
Able to Cane is a chair-caning business with locations in Portland, at 16 Byfield Road, and in Warren, at 439 Main St. They sell supplies and do repairs but can also arrange chair-caning instruction in one-on-one sessions in one of their shops. The owners also teach an adult education course at Medomak Valley High School in Waldoboro that begins in April. Able to Cane can be reached by calling 207-615-8373 or by emailing boz@midcoast.com.
If anyone in the Lewiston or Auburn area is able to give this reader a lesson, please call.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Several years ago I purchased a photo scrapbook at a flea market. It dates from about 1932 to 1946 and especially features a trip from the Lewiston-Auburn area down south and back through Niagara Falls in a brand-new 1932 Chevy Coupe belonging to R.H. “Andy” Anderson. Photos were taken by Ella Anderson. Other people mentioned are Jim and Ruth Stearns, James W. and Alice (Ramsdell) Oliver (a wedding picture stating they would live at 422 Sabattus St. in Lewiston), a picture of “our home from 1941 to 1945” at 34 Holly St. in Auburn, a picture of Fish and Sally Forristall at Grant Park, and also a picture of Carol Ann Hutchinson at 1 year old. There are probably more than 100 pictures. I’d like to give this back if anyone can show a relationship and desire. Call 207-362-5539 or email glenns@tdstelme.net. — Glenn, Smithfield.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: An earlier reader commented on WLAM radio station 1470 AM that plays oldies commercial-free with an occasional infomercial. I really enjoy that station, humming along to much of the music. The owner, Bob Baffert, would appreciate any donations so the station can continue with that format. He owns other stations that are self-supporting, but so far the donations for WLAM are below expectations. If you have discovered this station and enjoy the oldies basically uninterrupted, the address is P.O. Box 308, Bath, ME 04530. He’s also on Facebook, www.facebook.com/TheMemoriesStations. I certainly hope it can continue beyond August, when he will determine what to do. — Janet, Auburn.
