ORONO — Maine State Treasurer Terry Hayes of Buckfield was recently presented with the Distinguished Maine Policy Fellow Award by the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center and the Maine Business School at the University of Maine in Orono.

The MCS Policy Center is a nonpartisan, independent research and public service unit of UMaine. Created in 1989, the center was named to continue the legacy of Sen. Margaret Chase Smith who served as a model of civil discourse and integrity.

The Distinguished Maine Policy Fellows program brings key elected officials, along with other policymakers, to UMaine to increase awareness of the MCS Policy Center and the university. Hayes spent the day learning about research that students, faculty and MCS Policy Center staff have worked on, talking with them about civility in politics, and providing insight to students on challenges that policymakers face in Augusta.

Hayes met with several key administrators to learn more about the center and the university, and to increase awareness and to understand the usefulness of the MCS Policy Center to the state. She also met with students in the Leadership Foundations class and students from the College of Business.
