49 years ago   

A Teen Age and College Dance Contest will be held at Murray Hall on July 9th. Two beautiful trophies will be given away at this dance to the best dancing couple.

So far this year, there have been two such contests, this being the third. Throughout the year, there will be three more of which the winners of all six contests will compete in December.

Maine’s first evening Drive-In Church will open at the Mammouth Mart Shopping Center, Route 2, Rumford, Maine, on Sunday, July 7th at 8:45 p.m.

Services will be held each Sunday evening at 8:45 p.m., RAIN OR SHINE, for six weeks, July 7th through August 11.

Maine’s first evening Drive-In Church is the result of over four months of preparation by several committees from sponsoring churches.

The congregation of this unique church will sit in their own cars during he service. Chairs will be provided for pedestrians.

If the airplane strike is settled in London by next Wednesday, it is expected that Mrs. Dorothy Sharman, who resides in England, will arrive at Mrs. Doris Webster’s home in Fayette for a three week stay, during which time she will visit or call on other relatives and friends in the vicinity.  

25 years ago

The Jay Planning ‘board will hold a public hearing on a proposal by David and George Crowley to further divide a lot in the Warren Hill Subdivision.

The hearing will be held July 14 at 7 p.m. in the Planning Board room at the Jay town office. The hearing is set to hear testimony regarding the proposal by the Crowleys. interested people are invited to come and comment verbally or in writing.

Livermore selectmen are still looking for a newly-purchased fire truck to make its way into town.

The town’s fire chief and two firemen left for Pennsylvania close to four weeks ago to puck up the 1981 Ford F-800 pumper.

The Livermore drivers got as far as Portland with the new pumper when the motor blew a head gasket.

The dealer offered to have the engine rebuilt at a cost of $2,600. But it was decided that the engine was too far gone to rebuild, so selectmen opted for installing a warrantied factory rebuilt engine – at a cost of $7,000.

The dealer agreed to pay for half the cost, leaving Livermore to come up with the remaining $3,500.

The problems did not end there.

The fire truck reached Turner when a vacuum leak in the fuel line sent it back to Portland for more repairs, under warranty this time. It left for Livermore a third time but again broke down in Turner. It was returned to Rowe Ford in Westbrook for repairs.

The sounds of children playing could be heard at jay Elementary School Monday long before they could be seen.

Even the teachers got into the act as they helped students try out he new playground – Kid’s World.

Construction of the playground began last Wednesday, and except for a few minor things, the playground is complete.

Over a year of fundraising and planning went into the playground project, which cost nearly $30,000. 175 people put in volunteer time to build the play ground.

The Pine Cone Quilters, who meet every third and fourth Thursday at members homes, is donating a hand stitched radiant star quilt as a fundraiser for Community Emergency Services. CES is trying to raise nearly $92,000 for emergency equipment like cardiac monitors.
