LIVERMORE — Sara Chamberlain-Hughes is running for a three-year seat on the Regional School Unit 73 board of directors in the June 13 elections.
The seat is held by Cynthia Young.
Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Town Office Complex.
Hughes said she was concerned last fall about issues arising from consolidating the two elementary schools. After much discussion with other parents, teachers and emails and calls to the principals, she decided to attend the school board meetings and learn what she could.
As a result, she said she has a much better grasp on her child’s education and the direction of the district.
In April, she learned two directors from Livermore were up for re-election but neither would be running. She decided to become a candidate.
“I am concerned about the increasing cost of education. I am a taxpayer and have a family to support. However, our children should not pay the price, academically or financially, for inflating costs,” Hughes said.
She said salaries and benefits should increase, but new technologies can help offset these costs.
She also said she wants to identify greater efficiencies and eventually achieve an average cost per child that is lower than the state average because of those efficiencies not from underfunding the education budget.
“I know our region has a bright future if parents, teachers, administration and the community work together for this common goal,” she said.
“If everyone is willing, we should and can use outside of the box solutions,” she said.
Hughes is the senior accountant at Great Falls Marketing in Auburn.
Hughes and her husband, Tony, have three girls in the primary and elementary schools this year. Their oldest will be attending middle school in the fall.
