As elected officials representing Lewiston, we are deeply saddened and troubled by the heightened sense of fear that has been expressed by many in the Lewiston community. We appreciate the recent statement made by Mayor Robert Macdonald and interim Police Chief Brian O’Malley, asserting that “harassment based on race, religion, or other factors will not be tolerated in Lewiston.”

In addition, we feel it is important that all members of the community know they are respected and supported. It is truly the people who live here that make this city a community.

We stand together now to affirm our promise to provide a safe and inclusive environment in which all residents can build a life and raise a family, and to ensure the quality of life that each of us values so deeply.

Lewiston is a diverse and welcoming city. Working together, it will continue to grow and prosper.

We respectfully submit this letter on behalf of a majority of the Lewiston City Council, the Lewiston School Committee and the Lewiston legislative delegation.

Kristen Cloutier, president, Lewiston City Council

Linda Scott, chairperson, Lewiston School Committee

Nathan Libby, state senator, District 21
