AUBURN — The Central Maine Community College women’s basketball team is off to a quick 2-0 start.

The Mustangs defeated Champlain-St. Lawrence 76-62 on Sunday in a game that ended less than 24 hours after their season-opener — a victory over University of New Brunswick at St. John — began.

Brooke Reynolds notched her first double-double for CMCC, scoring 22 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. She also had five steals. Taylor Esty added 12 points off the bench on 4-of-4 shooting, and Jenny Schlim contributed 11 points and five steals.

Next up for the Mustangs is a home game against traditional USCAA power Berkley College (N.Y.) on Saturday.

Men’s basketball

CMCC 81, St. Thomas 63

Auburn — The Central Maine Community College men earned their first basketball win of the season, beating St. Thomas University 81-63 on Sunday.

Rob Skinner scored 16 points and dished out nine assists for the Mustangs (1-1), who opened the season Saturday with an 85-78 loss to University of New Brunswick at St. John.

Cornelius Lawhorn added 19 points on 9-of-10 shots, including three thunderous dunks, for CMCC. Sheveran Hardy scored 12 points in 16 minutes, and Pietro Badalassi contributed 12 points, nine boards and three steals.

The Mustangs next play in the SMCC invitational tournament at South Portland this weekend.

College field hockey

UMF 2, Southern Maine 1

GORHAM — Carly Raymond and Lauren Watson each scored to lift the University of Maine at Farmington a 2-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a nonconference field hockey tilt Sunday.

The Beavers (10-4) take a two-game winning streak into the North Atlantic Conference playoffs.

Raymond scored the only goal of the first half, and Watson’s tally made it 2-0 with 12 minutes to play in the game. Taylor Smedberg had the Huskies’ only goal, scoring with seven minutes remaining.

Top-seeded UMF hosts fourth seed Thomas College (4-11) in the NAC East Division semifinals Wednesday. If the Beavers win, they will host the winner of the other semifinal, between Colby-Sawyer and Husson, on Saturday.

Women’s rowing

Bates takes fourth, 12th

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Bates women’s crew rowed to fourth and 12th place finishes in the collegiate eights race at the 52nd Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday.

It was the Bobcats’ first regatta of the season, and first since finishing second in the 2016 NCAA championships earlier this year. The first varsity eight finished the 4,800-meter course in 18 minutes, 13.656 seconds. The second varsity eight also finished in the top half out of 28 boats, recording a time of 19:13.584. Wesleyan (18:04.538) took first in the race.

Bates’ varsity fours (24:08.792) entry placed 28th out of 35 boats.

Men’s rowing

Bates places ninth

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Bates had the third-best Division III boat and ninth-best overall in the men’s college eights race at the 52nd Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday.

The Bobcats navigated the 4,800-meter course in 16 minutes, 36.210 seconds. Rowing club Laga won with a time of 15:55.389. The only Division III crews to finish ahead of Bates were WPI (fourth) and Hobart (sixth).

The Bobcats’ collegiate fours boat was 18th out of 43 boats, finishing in 18:55.717.
