What is the most pressing problem in your district and what do you plan to do about it?

The aging of our population and our workforce. My personal solution: I refuse to grow old! As a legislator I will protect our services for the elderly while focusing on growing our small businesses, which have good growth potential, especially in high tech, to attract and retain our youth.

Gov. Paul LePage wants to eliminate the state income tax. Do you support that? If not, why not?

The concern I hear in Auburn and Minot is high property tax. There is no way to eliminate income tax without increases in other taxes, such as property and sales taxes, without massive cuts to services, including services and prescriptions for elderly, mental health care and drug treatment, law enforcement…

Are you willing to support raising the fuel tax to fix Maine roads? If not, why not?

Fuel prices fluctuate as does gas mileage and emissions from vehicle to vehicle. Our infrastructure requires a reliable source of funding. Rather than support a raise in the fuel tax, I would like to review this source of funding for sustainability and fairness.

The relationship between the governor and the Legislature has deteriorated over the past six years. What can the Legislature do to improve that relationship?

My motto is Listen : Learn : Lead. We must listen to the governor’s ideas and concerns, just as we should our constituents and other legislators. After listening and learning, in the end, we as legislators, must lead in the best interests of Maine.

What methods do you support to reduce opiate addiction in Maine?

Treatment, lower cost and more effective than jail; prevention, education and better control of opiate prescriptions and pain management; enforcement, police involvement to stop the flow of heroin. We must have all three. No one step will solve the problem alone.
