But outside of the easy-to-deduce A North, where do the other local teams sit right now?

Kramlich: Well now that you’ve mastered the 100-level of Maine high school football, I guess it is time to move on to harder subjects. Namely, how to make the playoff picture more clear.

As far as the classes/regions that our local teams fit into are concerned, Class B (North and South) and Class C South both have eight teams make the playoffs. That means in Class B North, Mt. Blue currently sits in the No. 8 position, while in Class B South, Leavitt is on the outside looking in. In Class C South, Spruce Mountain is in line for a home playoff game (currently third), while Mountain Valley could still earn one. The Falcons are currently sixth. Poland and Gray-New Gloucester, tied for eighth and alone in 10th, respectively, have work to do. But the Knights and Patriots do play each other to end the season, which could mean playoffs for Poland if it wins.

With Boothbay dropping out just prior to the season in Class D South, what was supposed to be an eight-team playoff (according to the MPA website) will now feature seven teams. No worries for our local teams, however, who currently hold the top four spots.

So now that you’re looking toward the playoffs already, what teams do you think are in position to win one or more games in the postseason?

Horton: It seems like the Class D South teams have the best shot to win more than one game, specifically, Winthrop/Monmouth, Lisbon and Oak Hill. The probable one-win teams are Oxford Hills/Buckfield and Spruce Mountain. Then again, both of those teams might have to beat another local team in the first round. Oxford Hills/Buckfield currently sits in fourth place in A North, and if the Vikings hold on to that position, they’ll host Edward Little. Remember how their first meeting turned out? If you forgot, the Red Eddies won on a last-second touchdown pass. Again, that is based on how things stand now. Oxford Hills/Buckfield can still move up or down a notch, as can Edward Little. The Red Eddies could also be supplanted by Lewiston, which would mean a Vikings-Blue Devils rematch in the postseason.

Spruce Mountain could face Mountain Valley in the first round. If things do shake out that way, it would mean that the Phoenix and the Falcons will face each other in two consecutive weeks, since they close the regular season against each other in Rumford. It’s tough to beat a good team two weeks in a row.

What do you think?

Also, of the three teams on the bubble — Mt. Blue, Leavitt and Poland — which do you think has the best shot at making it in? It might be Poland, right?

Kramlich: I predicted before the season that Spruce Mountain and Mountain Valley could see each other in a playoff rematch, so that’s cool that it could come to fruition.

As far as our three bubble teams, I actually think Mt. Blue has the best shot to get in. The Cougars could lose out (they do have heavyweights Brunswick and Skowhegan remaining), and still get in. Poland might need that win over Gray-New Gloucester, and that would punch the Knights’ ticket.

Leavitt, as weird as this might sound to say, has the hardest path to get into the playoffs. The Hornets have to win at least one of their last two games.

Leavitt always is in the postseason, but this might be the year that the Hornets give some other teams a chance to experience the postseason.
