The authority plans to seek permits to build the $40 million plaza at mile marker 8.8. It wants to replace the existing toll plaza because it’s sinking into clay soils at its existing location and a tunnel full of electrical components leaks.

The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/2dxaUuv ) reports residents said at a public hearing held Wednesday the project will cause environmental damage and that the authority hasn’t fully considered an all-electronic collection system.

Executive Director Peter Mills says an all-electronic toll booth would result in a significant revenue loss and added traffic on secondary roads near York.

Mills says the planned plaza will have minimal environmental impact.
