LEWISTON — Police have charged two 25-year-old local men with damaging the Kennedy Park bandstand and gazebo Tuesday night.
Richard Knox and Joseph Spiller each face misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief and are scheduled to be in court on Dec. 7, police said Thursday.
The bandstand, which reopened this summer after being closed for six years, has become a favorite spot for late-night carousing and drinking. The city noted vandals were kicking out the composite plastic spindles in the bandstand’s outer rail earlier in September and city officials said they are considering lighting the structure at night to make it easier for police to see people there.
Police responded to reports of vandalism at about 9:17 p.m. Tuesday, finding several spindles in the historic bandstand’s outer railing had been kicked out. Witnesses fingered Knox and Spiller and police were able to locate them and issue summonses.
The city was forced to close the gazebo on Wednesday after Tuesday’s vandalism, noting that not only had more spindles been kicked out but the gazebo’s railing itself had been damaged.
The concert scheduled at the gazebo Friday night as part of the L-A Art Walk will be held in the vicinity of the gazebo. The concert will begin at 5 p.m.
