MINOT — Selectmen on Monday gave the Minot-Hebron Athletic Association permission to re-sod the infield of field No. 1 behind the Town Office.

Mike Rioux, association spokesperson, said a couple of seasons ago they stripped the infield to eliminate a grub infestation and now want to replace the sod. He said they intend to use Premier Landscape of Minot for $3,500.

Once the new sod is put down, it will have to be watered at least every other day for the first two weeks. Rioux asked whether it would be possible to use water from the town well.

Selectman Steve French said the water is being filtered to eliminate arsenic and using that amount of water would unnecessarily use up the filter’s arsenic-removing capacity.

Fire Chief Dean Campbell suggested they could use the well the Fire Department uses, which is not filtered.

In other business:

* Town Administrator Arlan Saunders opened four bids for winter sand. They ranged from $4.95 per cubic yard undelivered to $9.99 delivered. He said he specified “delivered” and selectmen awarded the bid to Peter Hemond, whose bid of $6.65 per ton delivered was lowest of the three that qualified.

The town generally uses about 4,000 cubic yards each winter but Hemond will be asked to deliver only 3,000 cubic yards, Saunders said, because the town has about 1,000 yards left from last year.

* On the matter of re-roofing the Town Office, Saunders said he sent bids to half a dozen local roofers and received “nary a bid.”

He said the roof is in dire need of replacement and while the town road crew had done some emergency patching, pouring “plenty of gunk” into a problematic valley, it could be touch and go this winter. It needs to be stripped and covered with about 34 squares of shingles, he said.

Selectmen directed Saunders to contact a few firms and ask for a price.

* Saunders said the summer paving program is complete, and more was done than originally planned because of a favorable bid. Besides work on Goodwin, Verrill and Garfield roads, 1.3 miles of Center Minot Hill Road was done.

“We were able to do that portion of Center Minot Hill Road and still come in about $21,000 under budget,” Saunders said.

* He said Kurt Youland, developer of Scenic Heights subdivision, has indicated he will clean out the fire pond on Highland Drive this week.
