Lewiston City Council Workshop and regular meeting

Sept. 20, 2016

Lewiston City Hall

YWCA roof
What happened: Lewiston’s YWCA of Central Maine will get city help replacing the building’s 45-year-old roof.
What it means: Councilors agreed Tuesday to set aside $130,000 from the city’s share of federal Community Development Block Grant money to replace and repair the roof on the building at 130 East Ave.
The 1971 building still has its original roof. A September 2015 review showed it was leaking and in critical need of repair but a May 2016 study showed the support structure was solid.
YWCA has about 1,000 regular members and many more nonmember users. It’s also the only pool for local high school swim teams and programs for area special education programs and health agencies. The YWCA also provides summer camps and child care.
What’s Next: The work should be finished this winter before snow arrives.

Permitted to junk
What happened: Five Lewiston junkyards — also called “automobile graveyards” in city ordinances — won approval to continue operations for another year.
What it means: Councilors approved junkyard permits for Dana’s Garage at 193 Crowley Road, Maine Heavy Equipment Rental at 1445 Sabattus St., Grimmel’s Industries at 50 River Road, ReEnergy of Lewiston at 38 Alfred A. Plourde Pkwy,  and the city’s Public Works Department at 425 River Road.
What’s Next: The operations can continue for another year and must come back for a new permit in 2017.

Permitted to amuse
What happened: Fast Breaks, 1465 Lisbon St., can continue offering drinks alongside other amusements for another year.
What it means: Councilors approved a new special amusement permit for the establishment. Councilors approve liquor licenses and special amusement permits when drinking establishments first open. While liquor licenses are good until taken away for violations, special amusement permits must be renewed by councilors each year. These permits allow on-site entertainment, including music from a disc jockey or a live band, karaoke and dancing.
