FARMINGTON — The Western Maine Blacksmith Association is hosting two upcoming blacksmithing classes.

The Basics: A Beginners Class: Saturday, Sept. 10. Dick Tessier of Skowhegan will teach this class, which is suitable for those 14 or older interested in blacksmithing, whether they’re self-taught beginners or have never worked at a forge. Tessier has developed a brief handbook for beginners. Cost is $75. 

An Ornamental Work: Scrolls, Leaves & Advanced Work: Saturday, Oct. 8. Pat Roy of Belfast will teach this class, which is appropriate for those 14 or older with experience in blacksmithing and who are ready to learn advanced techniques. Roy makes a wide variety of products in his Big Rock Forge from jewelry to cabinet hardware. He has been teaching classes and giving demonstrations for the Blacksmith Association for several years. Cost is $100.

Both classes will meet from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Blacksmith Shop at the Farmington Fairgrounds. There will be a lunch break.

The classes tend to fill quickly and space is reserved when tuition payment is received.
