PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Nearly 100 Mercy Hospital workers in Portland have been offered one-time early retirement buyouts.

Spokesman Wayne Clark says the hospital wants to improve its financial position and reduce its workforce as it prepares to consolidate operations at its Fore River campus.

The Portland Press Herald reports the offer was given to some workers who are at least 60 years old and have worked there for at least a decade are eligible for the buyout.

The buyout is equal to a week’s pay for each year they worked there, up to 52 weeks.

Doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants are not eligible for the buyouts, along with nurse anesthetists, managers, and those who work with patients who have eating disorders.

Clark says there’s less demand for some services.
