RUMFORD — A husband and wife suffered head injuries Sunday afternoon when their motorcycle went off the road near Half Mile Curve.

Rumford Police Department Sgt. Tracey Higley said the Rumford couple was traveling westbound when the driver, 52-year-old Ernest Peare, lost control and veered off the side of the road around 2:30 p.m.

Both he and his wife, 42-year-old Penny Peare, were thrown from the bike. They were wearing helmets.

Each sustained head injuries and broken bones; Ernest also suffered lacerations. Penny Peare was flown via LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with what appeared to be injuries that were not life-threatening. Ernest Peare was driven to Rumford Hospital. His injuries were also thought to be not life-threatening.

Speed did not appear to be a factor. Higley did not anticipate charges being filed.

Traffic was open to Route 2 for the duration of the incident.
