As the weather continues warming and we do our best to enjoy the outdoors more, it is important to remember to respect signage and warning signals around hydroelectric facilities. Whether fishing, boating or hiking, you need to be cautious when recreating near these facilities as water conditions can change quickly and without notice.
Here in Lewiston-Auburn, Brookfield Renewable owns and operates Monty Dam which generates clean electricity for almost 20,000 local homes and businesses in the surrounding areas. Overlooking Great Falls, the West Pitch Park offers great views for everyone to enjoy.
Recently, Brookfield Renewable and both the Lewiston and Auburn Police Departments, have observed an increase in trespassing onto the rocks below Monty Dam. Not only is this dangerous, it is also illegal and a punishable offense.
“It is important for members of the public to know that trespassing onto the rocks below the dam is illegal, and we are constantly patrolling the area,” said Lieutenant Timothy Cougle of the Auburn Police Department. “The department is using an ATV to increase patrol of West Pitch Park and we want everyone to know that this is a very serious public safety concern.”
We are all strongly committed to public safety and to providing a safe recreational experience for our neighbors throughout the Lewiston-Auburn community. Pay attention to your surroundings, respect all signs and warning signals and always wear a suitable life jacket when recreating on or near water.
Together, we can enjoy the Androscoggin River and the lands surrounding it.
