FREEMAN TOWNSHIP — A local man is accused of sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 18.

Timothy Russo, 19, was arrested Tuesday on a felony charge of gross sexual assault, Franklin County Detective Kenneth Charles said Wednesday.

Charles received a referral from Maine Department of Health and Human Services Child Protective Services that a girl had disclosed that she had been sexually assaulted by Russo, he said.

He conducted an investigation and subsequently arrested Russo.

A conviction on the charge carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.

Russo was released later in the day from the Franklin County jail in Farmington on $1,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to appear June 28 at a Farmington court on the charge.
