BUCKFIELD — Buckfield rebounded from a 15-12 loss to Vinalhaven/North Haven in a Game 1 of a softball doubleheader Saturday, but the Bucks returned the favor with a 13-6 victory in Game 2.

In Game 1, Buckfield’s Alexis Bennett had three hits in a slugfest that featured 26 hits.

The Bucks returned the favor in Game 2 when they erupted with eight runs in the fourth inning and eventually hammered out nine hits and made only two errors. Ashley Campbell had three hits for Buckfield (2-1).

UMF swept

HENNIKER, N.H.University of Maine at Farmington softball (1-14, 0-2) could not get past North Atlantic Conference frontrunner New England College (13-13, 4-0) by falling in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Beavers were topped in the first game 6-1 and then 8-3 in the second game.

 Kiana Thompson was 2-for-2 in the first game with a double. Meryl Bond  and Tasha DeRoshe) also recorded hits for UMF in the opening contest. Kylie Cunningham came through with an RBI groundout in the seventh inning to plate UMF’s lone run.

 Cunningham crushed a two-run single in the top of the first inning of the second game and gave the Beavers an early 2-0 lead.

College baseball

UMF sweep Lyndon State

FARMINGTON — University of Maine at Farmington baseball (10-10, 3-7) came alive at the plate with 28 runs in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader sweep of Lyndon State (4-18, 1-9) on Saturday afternoon at Hippach Field. The Beavers took the first game 16-5 and 12-2 in the second game.

 UMF used seven runs in the first two innings of the first game to build some momentum. After Lyndon answered with three runs in the third inning, the Beavers came back with nine runs in the fourth inning.

 Nate Pushard had a solid outing on the hill in six innings of work. The sophomore surrendered four earned runs and fanned four Hornets.

Hartford 6, Portland 2

PORTLAND — The Hartford Yard Goats (7-3) used strong pitching to take Game 3 of their series with the Sea Dogs (4-6), winning 6-2 at Hadlock Field on Saturday.
 
For the second straight game, the Yard Goats starting pitcher worked seven innings. Harrison Musgrave (W, 1-0) allowed just two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out two.
 
Hartford took the early lead on a bases-loaded walk by Raimel Tapia in the second inning off from Ty Buttrey (L, 0-2). The Yard Goats added another run in the fourth, and later Pat Valaika made it a 3-0 lead with a solo home run in the fifth over the Maine Monster. Buttrey allowed three earned runs on four hits in 5.1 innings, walking two and striking out five.
