KITTERY (AP) — The deadline is nearing for hunters to apply for one of Maine’s coveted moose hunting permits, which again face a reduction this year.
State hunting regulators say paper applications must be postmarked by Friday. The deadline to apply online is May 16.
The state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says the drawing is scheduled for June 11 at Kittery Trading Post.
State biologists say the permits should be cut by 24 percent to meet public demand to view the animals in the wild. The state currently plans to issue 2,140 permits. Permits were also reduced last year.
The lottery typically attracts tens of thousands of applicants.
