LEWISTON — The fifth annual Maine’s Got Talent fundraiser was a local hit at the Dolard and Priscilla Gendron Franco Center on Saturday night.
With food and drinks available downstairs, the musical acts in the performance hall and the witty banter between the host and the judges, it was a good time all around.
Molly McGill, described as “a woman who can work the stage and a previous performer and judge” hosted the event.
McGill encouraged the crowd to “sing along, clap, hoot and holler.”
The main event was, of course, the music. Ten local artists, who were chosen through an audition round, competed with original songs or unique covers. They were judged on the quality of their stage presence, vocals and instrumentals.
Up for grabs were a first-place prize of $750, a second-place prize of $500, and a third-place prize of $250.
The contestants were scored on a 1-10 scale by the panel of local celebrity judges: former contestant Shawn Robitaille, WBLM morning host Celeste, and Franco Center Executive Director Mitch Thomas.
First place went to Colby Eight, an a cappella group from Colby College in Waterville. Second place was awarded to Morgan Foss, 19, of Lewiston, who played piano and sang “She Used to Be Mine” from the Broadway musical “Waitress.” And placing third was Kerri Haer, who moved to Maine recently from Boston and sang a Melissa Etheridge song.
Other competitors were The Sleep Sound, Matt Fournier and Doctor Fatfinger, The Paul Houston Project, Trevor Laliberte, Nikita Drake, Ron Bergeron and the The Id Complex.
